TITLE: WATER PUMP CASSETTE DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to a piston assembly for a water pump, to a water pump incorporating the piston assembly, and to a method of renovating a used water pump assembly. Hand-driven water pumps are widely used in bore holes to access underground water reserves. However, many of the water pumps tend to break down within a few years of installation and need to be repaired or maintained with the use of spare parts. However, the spare parts and technical expertise for repairs may not always be readily available, particularly in developing parts of the world. Large, large numbers of water pumps are abandoned every year once they break down. There are numerous different designs or hand-driven water pumps in use today. These include the Afridev hand pump and the Afripump ™ hand pump (provided by Jansen Venneboer BV). Just though the latter may not need any spare parts for 15 to 25 years, the present applicant has appreciated that a simplified system for repairing both types of hand pump (and other types or pumps as well) would be an enormous advantage in developing parts of the world. Applicable for providing a modular pump assembly which can be employed in different pumping systems. In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a piston assembly for a water pump including: a body for reciprocal movement in a cylinder, the body including: a variety of interfitting piston rings having complementary profiles which interfit when the piston rings are registered and urged together; and means for holding the interfitting piston rings together during reciprocating movement of the body. The length of the piston may be varied by varying the number of interfitting piston rings used in the body. This may be advantageous when tailoring the piston assembly to account for different pressure heads (depth of well) which may be encountered with different bore holes. For instance, a very shallow bore hole may only need two or three interfitting piston rings to create an efficient seal, while a deep bore hole may require many more. The present applicant has appreciated that a conventional piston, which is typically a single piece component machined from extruded bar stock, is more difficult to adapt to different situations where it is used. The piston rings may be annular and, in use, define a bore in the body. The body may further include a valve (hereinafter referred to as a "plunger valve") configured to allow fluid to pass therethrough during stroke movement of the body in a first direction (eg downward stroke direction), and to prevent passage of fluid therethrough during stroke movement of the body in a second direction (eg upward stroke direction) which is opposite to the first direction. The plunger valve may be in fluid communication with the bore in the body, such that in use fluid passing through the valve during stroke movement or the body in the first direction enters the bore in the body. The means for holding the interfitting piston rings together during reciprocating movement of the body may include a clamp applying axial compression to the interfitting piston rings. The clamp may comprise a rod extending through the multiple of piston rings. The tie rod may extend axially through the various of piston rings. When the piston rings are annular and define the bore in the body, the tie rod may extend through the bore while still allowing fluid to pass therethrough (i.e. the tie rod does not block the bore). One end of the tie rod is configured for attachment to a drive shaft for driving reciprocating movement of the body. The variety of interfitting rings may be molded, e.g. from wear-resistant thermoplastic (which may help to avoid serious damage to the body if the water pump is used in dry / drought conditions). The complementary profiles which interface may include a depending flange or wall and a stepped recess in which the depending flange or wall is a snug sliding fit. The complementary profiles may lock together when interfitted. The body may further include at least one load / wear bearing. For example, a load / wear bearing may be provided at each end of the body, and / or in the middle of the body. The plunger valve may include a ball (e.g., stainless steel ball) and a valve seat (e.g., conic valve seat or wear-resistant plastic material) defining an aperture, with the ball sealing the aperture when urged against the valve seat. The plunger valve may further include a guide member for guiding the ball to the valve seat. In this way, the ball may be guided directly into engagement with the valve seat, without vibrating or "rattling" therearound. The guide member may include a variety of fingers extending away from the valve seat, with the ball being a snug fit between the multiple or fingers when approaching the valve seat. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a water pump for use in a bore hole, including: a cylinder; a piston assembly which may be in accordance with the first aspect of the invention, the piston assembly being mounted for reciprocal movement in the cylinder; and a valve (hereinafter referred to as a "foot valve") mounted in one end of the cylinder and configured to allow fluid to pass therethrough into the cylinder during stroke movement of the piston assembly in a direction away from the foot valve, and to prevent passage of fluid therethrough during stroke movement of the piston assembly in a direction towards the foot valve. When the piston assembly includes a plunger valve (such as the plunger valve or the first aspect of the invention), the plunger and foot valves are arranged to work in sympathy with one valve opening as the other closes. In this way, the valves allow fluid into the cylinder and thereafter allow fluid trapped into the cylinder to pass through the body of the piston assembly as it reciprocates into the cylinder. The water pump may include an adapter for positioning and / or securing the cylinder in an existing cylinder or existing rising main installed in a bore hole. By definition, the cylinder of the water pump must be able to fit inside the existing cylinder and / or existing rising main. Thus, the cylinder may have at least one engagement feature for engaging the adapter, the least one engagement feature may be located at one end of the cylinder. The adapter may engage or even incorporate the foot valve. A variety of adapters may be provided each for use with a different system already installed in a bore hole. The variety of adapters may have fittings for engaging receiver parts or brass and plastic foot valves or an Afridev deep-well hand pump. In accordance with yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided method of renovating a used water pump assembly, the used water pump assembly including a used water pump coupled to a rising main mounted in a bore hole, the used water pump including a cylinder, a piston assembly, and a drive shaft coupled to the piston assembly to drive reciprocating movement of the piston assembly in the cylinder, the method including: removing the drive shaft and piston assembly or the used water pump from the bore hole; providing a water pump assembly according to the second aspect of the invention; and securing the water pump assembly in the cylinder or rising main of the used water pump assembly without removing the cylinder or rising main of the used water pump from the bore hole. In the case of renovating the Afridev deep-well hand pump, the method may further include: removing the foot valve or the used water pump from the bore hole; providing the water pump assembly with an adapter for engaging the cylinder of the used water pump assembly; and securing the water pump assembly in the cylinder of the used water pump assembly. The foot valve may have been removed in accordance with maintenance instructions for the Afridev deep-well hand pump, for example within the aid of a special tool which attaches to the end of the plunger rod. The adapter may be selected from a range of adapters, depending on whether the foot valve or the used water pump assembly is made of metal (e.g. brass) or plastics material, since the two valve designs have different profiles. In the case of renovating the Afripump ™ hand-pump, the method may further include: providing the water pump assembly with a tapered or flared adapter; and securing the water pump assembly in the rising main of the used water pump assembly, with the tapered or flared adapter wedged between the cylinder of the water pump assembly and the rising main of the used water pump assembly. An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded perspective view of a water pump embodying one aspect of the present invention; Figure 2 shows a cross sectional view of the water pump of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows details of the water pump or Figure 1; and Figure 4 shows a cut away view of the water pump installed in a rising main. Figures 1 and 2 shows a water pump 10 embodying the present invention which includes a piston assembly 12 and a cylinder 14. The piston assembly 12 comprises a body 16 for reciprocating movement in the cylinder 14, with the body 16 including a multiple of interfitting piston rings 18. The interfitting piston rings 18 have complementary profiles which interfit when the piston rings 18 are registered and urged together. Tie bar 22 and brackets 24 provide a clamping mechanism to hold the interfitting piston rings 18 together during reciprocating movement of the piston assembly in the cylinder 14. Figure 3 shows greater detail of the water pump 10. The piston rings 18 are annular, and together define a bore 30 extending through the body 16. The complementary profiles of each piston ring 18 include a depending wall 32 and a stepped recess 34, with the former being sized to be a snug fit in the latter to enable adjacent piston rings 18 to interfit. The body 16 further comprises a plunger valve 36 (including a ball and cone-shaped valve seat 38) which is configured to allow water to pass during a down-stroke of the piston assembly 12 in the cylinder 14, and to prevent passage or water therethrough during a subsequent up-stroke. The plunger valve 36 is in fluid communication with the bore 30 such that water passing through the plunger valve 36 during the down-stroke fills the bore 30. The water pump 10 further comprises a foot valve 40 (including a ball and cone-shaped valve seat) arranged at the bottom of cylinder 14. The foot valve 40 is configured to allow surrounding water to pass therethrough into the cylinder 14 as the piston assembly 12 moves away from the foot valve 40 (ie during an upward stroke of the piston assembly 12 in the cylinder 14), and to prevent passage of water therethrough as the piston assembly 12 moves towards the foot valve (ie during a downward stroke of the piston assembly 12 in the cylinder 14). Thus, the plunger valve 36 and foot valve 40 work in sympathy, with one valve closing as the other opens in order to carry out the cycle of allowing water into the cylinder 14 and thereafter allowing water trapped in the cylinder 14 to pass through the body of the piston assembly 12 as it reciprocates in the cylinder 14. The water pump 10 further comprises two different adapters 50, 52 which incorporate the seat of the foot valve 40 and are intended to be used when renovating a used water pump assembly. The choice of adapter 50, 52 to be used is dependent on the specifics of the used water pump assembly. (For example, in the case of an Afridev used water pump assembly, adapter 50 is configured to fit one type of fitting) and adapter 52 is configured to fit another type of fitting (associated with a metal foot valve or the used water pump assembly)). Figure 4 illustrates how the water pump 10 is used to renovate a used water pump assembly 60, such as provided by Afridev. The used water pump assembly 60 comprises a used water pump coupled to a rising main 62 mounted in a bore hole 64. The used water pump includes a cylinder 66, a piston assembly (which is not shown because it has been removed), and a drive shaft 68 to drive reciprocating motion in the cylinder 66. The piston assembly of the used water pump, together with the foot valve of the cylinder 66 of the used water pump, have been replaced by the water pump 10. The water pump 10 is hero in place via an adapter 50 which engages the fitting 70 in the cylinder 66 (which originally housed the foot valve or the cylinder 66).

Claims (13) [1] A piston assembly for a water pump, comprising: a body for reciprocal movement of a cylinder, the body comprising: a plurality of mutually matching piston rings with complementary profiles that fit between themselves when the piston rings are superposed and placed against each other; and means for holding the matched piston rings together during reciprocal movement of the body. [2] Piston assembly according to claim 1, wherein the piston rings are annular and define a bore in the body. [3] A piston assembly according to claim 2, wherein the body further comprises a piston valve which is adapted to allow a fluid during a stroke movement of the body in a first direction therethrough, and to allow passage of a fluid therethrough during a stroke movement of the body in a second direction direction opposite to the first direction. [4] The piston assembly of claim 3, wherein the piston valve is in fluid communication with the bore in the body such that a fluid passes therethrough during a stroke movement of the body in the first direction. [5] Piston assembly according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the holding means comprise a clamp which exerts an axial compression on the mutually matching piston rings. [6] A piston assembly according to claim 5, wherein the clamp comprises a pull rod that extends through the plurality of piston rings. [7] A piston assembly according to claim 6, wherein the drawbar extends axially through the plurality of piston rings. [8] A piston assembly according to claim 6 or 7, wherein one end of the drawbar is adapted for attachment to a drive shaft. [9] A piston assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of mutually matching piston rings are injection molded products. [10] A water pump for use in a borehole, comprising: a cylinder; a piston assembly according to any of claims 1-9, wherein the piston assembly is mounted in the cylinder for reciprocal movement; and a foot valve mounted in one end of the cylinder and adapted to allow a fluid during a stroke movement of the piston assembly in a direction away from the foot valve therethrough into the cylinder, and to allow passage of a fluid therethrough during a stroke movement of the cylinder body in a direction towards the foot valve. [11] Water pump according to claim 10, as far as dependent on claim 3 or 4, wherein the piston valve and the foot valve are arranged to operate in accordance, wherein one valve opens when the other closes. [12] A water pump according to claim 10 or 11, further comprising an attachment for positioning and / or securing the cylinder in an existing cylinder or existing riser pipe installed in a borehole. [13] A method for renovating a used water pump assembly, the used water pump assembly comprising a used water pump coupled to a riser mounted in a borehole, the used water pump having a cylinder, a cylinder assembly, and a reciprocal movement actuator the piston assembly in the cylinder comprises drive shaft coupled to the piston assembly, the method comprising: removing the drive shaft and the piston assembly from the used water pump from the borehole; providing a water pump assembly according to any of claims 10 to 12; and securing the water pump assembly in the cylinder or riser of the used water pump assembly without removing the cylinder or riser of the used water pump from the borehole.
